HAWKS NEST
NATURE walk

The Hawks Nest Nature Walk
Myall Koala Environment Group October 2021

Each of the 10 tree guards on the walk have two plaques with brief information about some of our local animals and birds. The guards were made by our Men’s Shed, and MidCoast Council helped with their installation.

The Nature Walk honours the late John Davis, who was passionate about our local vegetation and worked with Council to try and retain as much as possible in a rapidly developing area. This sign to remember him is at the start of Sanderling Avenue.
Distance:   6.5kms (map below)
Time:   90 minutes at a steady pace

Two intersecting loops take you through Hawks Nest bush and streets to enjoy the wildflowers and habitat trees for which the area is renowned, earning it the name The Wildside.

The trees in the guards are a favourite koala species, the dwarf Parramatta red gum, Eucalyptus parramattensis, which are suitable for suburban gardens, being a relatively small variety growing between four to six meters high. Many of the other trees will eventually be labelled so residents will be able to choose the most suitable species to plant for their property.

September is our best month for wildflowers, although any time of the year something will be in flower.
