The Koala Group is involved in many activities to protect our endangered koalas and the local environment:

Koala Recovery Plan – participating in the Koala Recovery Plan managed by MidCoast Council, NPWS and other agencies.

Koala surveys – funding and participating in koala surveys identifying key koala habitats in the Myall Coast region.

Lobbying Council and the state government over inappropriate developments such as those involving excessive tree removal, destruction of core koala habitat, severing of wildlife movement corridors or other environmentally damaging proposals.

Supporting environmentally sensitive developments such as the one proposed a few years ago for North Hawks Nest (now sadly defunct).

Tree planting – planting thousands of koala food trees in public reserves.

Annual tree giveaway – encouraging residents to plant koala food trees on their own properties by our annual tree giveaway program at the Myall River Festival.

Bitou Busters – removing invasive weeds such as Bitou Bush, Lantana, Asparagus Fern and Honeysuckle from reserves and public land.

Rescuing sick or injured wildlife, particularly koalas.

Koala sightings –  maintaining a database of koala sightings via our telephone hotline (4997 0878).

Educating the wider community on koala issues by regular reports in the local papers, posts on Facebook and by presentations to community groups.
