This morning’s bitou session went very well as nineteen enthusiastic volunteers attacked a smorgasbord of weeds along the Boulevarde, Hawks Nest in pleasant weather conditions.
Saturday 28th May the Bitou Busters started work at the eastern end of the Winda Woppa beachside bush. They worked diligently for an hour and a half making an impression on the mother of millions, bitou, polygala, morning glory, Easter cassia and our old favourite, asparagus fern.
These weeds were smothering the native plants so effectively that they left no room for biodiversity to thrive.
Weeds impact our dunes and bush by competing with native plants for water, sunlight and space. They were forming dense areas of weeds that were killing the native plants, which in turn has a harmful effect on native animals.
Weeds reduce these animals' food sources and destroy the habitat that is essential to their survival.
The volunteers welcomed the new volunteers Trish and Tony Welsh and Ken Woodward, who has some history with plantings on the site worked which are now well-established trees, thanks Ken.
