On Saturday 25 July, we had a terrific turnout of ten volunteers for our third consecutive Saturday tackling mother of millions along The Boulevarde. Considering we woke to temperatures well into the single digits, it was an impressive effort.
With bottoms up and heads down, it wasn't long before the extra layers started coming off as everyone warmed to the task.
More than 20 bags of the ubiquitous mother of millions (MOM) were collected and disposed of in the red-lidded bins. Our hard work is certainly making a difference, with visible progress along the site, although many more hours will be needed before we can confidently say the area is free of both young and mature plants.
I think we all became a little "MOM mad" by the end of the morning. Judging by the laughter, good-natured muttering and lively conversations, collecting those mature flower heads became something of an obsession! And no matter how many we removed, there always seemed to be plenty more waiting for us on the next patch.
At least half a dozen exceptionally long plants were entered into the unofficial competition for the longest Mother of Millions specimen. Sadly, without a tape measure—and with everyone in need of a well-earned caffeine fix—you'll have to judge the winner yourself when you see the group photo!
A fantastic effort by everyone involved. Thank you to all our volunteers for another productive and enjoyable morning.
